Leaning On the Shoulders of Past Men

An example of how we bring the old to the new is in music. A new school singer can take an older song and make it their own. They often time add a twist to a song. This could be a new beat, changed lyrics, or added singing roles. This is a form of musical art. It is being creative and original while leaning on the shoulders of those that came before you.

Race and Gender Criticism

The paragraph that we read in this piece is about the argument of whether on how to judge the quality of some art work. It questions the reader on whether or not people with less polwer should be judged by the same rubric as people with more power. The article says that criticism is based on art's asethetic principles. These principles were developed in the mainstream of Western Culture. How then should we judge art that is part of a certain tradition of art works?

The Art of Graffiti

When asked to write about a cultural phenomenon, the topic that immediately popped into my head was graffiti art. Much of graffiti art is seen to be wrong and not socially accepted by some people. However, to others, art is seen to be a work of wonder by the hand. Compared to other art, graffiti can be viewed as illegal. It is not often come across in an art gallery or museum. Much of graffiti is varies from neighborhoods. It is a cultural indicator of who and what happens and is felt in those neighborhoods. Most of the time you will see it on streets and ally walls.

Graffiti is usually done as an expression. It may not be commonly come across in musuems, but that does not mean it is not important. It usualy consists of multiple colors and shapes of different words. The words may represent a group or people, or persons who would like be well known for their art. If you ask me, graffiti is not well known for its look, but for its purpose.
